Geotechnical Assessment Birmingham – Northpoint’s Birmingham team conducts fieldworks and a technical assessment at Dudley Street / Guns Village Metro Station in the West Midlands.

Geotechnical Assessment Dudley

Working on behalf of Haystoun Construction, Northpoint delivers a Geotechnical Assessment in Birmingham to aid the temporary works design for improvement and upgrade works.

The area of ground investigation is located at the Dudley Street Overbridge, immediately north of the Dudley Street / Guns Village metro station.

The Dudley Street bridge comprises a single-span overbridge constructed on brick masonry abutments. It currently supports a two-lane single-carriageway, footpaths on either side, and a cycle lane on the northern pavement.

To the north is the metro route with the A41 Black Country Road overbridge c. 20m north of Dudley Street Bridge. To the south is Dudley Street / Guns Village Metro Station. To the east and west is Dudley Street with residential development to the west and commercial development to the east.

The Geotechnical Assessment Birmingham scheme is to aid the strengthening, replacement, and maintenance work for the Dudley Street Metro Bridge. The work involves the partial replacement of the existing bridge deck – the footway sections of the overbridge, on either side of Dudley Street, are to be removed and replaced. To facilitate the construction temporary works are required, and vital geotechnical information provided by Northpoint underpins the design.

The intrusive geotechnical investigation undertaken by Northpoint support several temporary works:

  • Temporary abutment stability
  • Crane outrigger mat foundations
  • Temporary service bridge foundations
  • Temporary scaffold foundations for bridge parapet works

Our remit is to determine the nature of the Made Ground, superficial deposits (Glaciofluvial Deposits and Till) and the groundwater conditions above the bedrock (Etruria Formation).

Our investigation comprised several elements including the supervision and project management of:

  • PAS 128 Level B and Level A
  • Boreholes
  • Manual Trial Pits excavations
  • Structural Coring through the bridge abutment
