Dudley Street / Guns Village Metro Bridge – Geotechnical Assessment

Supporting safe temporary works for critical bridge upgrade in Birmingham

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Delivering geotechnical data for structural improvements at a key West Midlands transport link

Northpoint Geotechnical was appointed by Haystoun Construction to carry out a detailed Geotechnical Assessment for the Dudley Street / Guns Village Metro Bridge in Birmingham.

The bridge, a single-span brick masonry structure, carries road traffic, pedestrians, and cyclists over the metro route. Upgrade works involved partial deck replacement and structural improvements, requiring robust geotechnical data to support the temporary works design.

Our investigation ensured the safe planning and execution of construction activities in a complex urban environment.

CLIENT REQUIREMENTS & CHALLENGES

Ensuring safe, stable temporary works in a constrained urban site

  • Provide geotechnical data to underpin the design of temporary abutment stability measures.

  • Assess ground conditions for crane outrigger mat foundations, service bridge foundations, and scaffold footings.

  • Investigate Made Ground, glaciofluvial deposits, till, and groundwater conditions over Etruria Formation bedrock.

  • Coordinate works in a busy transport corridor with nearby residential and commercial properties.

  • Ensure safe working near live metro lines and public spaces.

OUR APPROACH & METHODOLOGY

Targeted intrusive investigation for accurate design parameters

  1. PAS 128 Utility Surveys: Completed Level B and Level A surveys to locate underground services before excavation.

  2. Boreholes & Trial Pits: Executed machine-drilled boreholes and manual trial pits to assess soil, rock, and groundwater conditions.

  3. Structural Coring: Drilled through bridge abutments to assess masonry composition and structural integrity.

  4. Ground Characterisation: Identified Made Ground thickness, properties of glaciofluvial and till deposits, and water table levels.

  5. Project Management: Managed on-site works to minimise disruption to surrounding transport and pedestrian areas.

RESULTS & DELIVERABLES

Comprehensive data package enabling safe, compliant temporary works design

  • Delivered detailed ground condition profiles and geotechnical parameters for design use.

  • Provided recommendations for abutment stability, crane mat design, and temporary bridge support structures.

  • Supplied structural coring results to inform bridge deck and parapet works.

  • Supported compliance with safety, regulatory, and engineering best practices.
